In Memory of Gerald Robert ‘Bob’ Hilchey

First Baptist Church Halifax extends sincere sympathy to the family and friends of the late Gerald Robert “Bob” Hilchey who died in Truro on August 19, 2013. Bob was the baritone soloist in our choir for a number of years.

HILCHEY, Gerald Robert ‘Bob’  – Age 63, of Truro, passed away Au­gust 19, 2013, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre after a year­long battle with cancer. Born in Truro on March 14, 1950, he was a son of Geraldine and the late John Hilchey. Robert grew up in Truro and ex­celled in academics and music. He earned the Governor General’s Medal for outstanding achievement at Truro Senior High. He also was a Queens Scout. After graduating from Dalhousie in 1972 with an Honours Degree in Physics, he joined Maritime Tel and Tel in Hali­fax where he worked for many years as a computer systems architect. Robert eventually was involved in sales support for billing systems sold internationally. After he left MT&T, Robert formed his own website design business in Truro. He was active in music, performing with the First Baptist choir in Hali­fax as well as the Cantabile Singers in Truro. He was generous with his time as a volunteer doing tax re­turns in the Truro community and for his support of the Truro Music Festival. His major passion was the Truro Heritage Society, where he collected in formation on the histor­ical hous es of Truro. His passion for history led him to write a book on the Hilchey and McElhiney families. Robert is survived by his mother, Gerry, of Truro; his brother, David (Carol), of Chester; his uncle, John McElhiney, of Truro; nephews, Andrew (Lori) and Stephen (Bridget), both of Halifax. Crema­tion has taken place. There will be a celebration of his life on Thursday evening, August 22, between the hours of 7 and 9 p.m. in Mattatall Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young St., Truro. Interment will be a private family service. Donations can be made to Canadian Cancer Society or charity of choice. Special thanks go to the staff at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, the QEII Can­cer Centre, and The Lodge That Gives.
