BWA Congress 2025: Reflections
In case you weren’t aware, Australia is really, really far away. My total journey time—including layovers—was around thirty-six hours. Somehow, I even lost a day in transit thanks to time zones.

Our church has sponsored two more refugees. They have arrived, they have been reunited with their family, and are now permanent residents of Canada.
The Refugee Committee is excited to announce the arrival of Abshira and Abdikadir. After facing numerous delays in coming to Canada, the pair arrived from a refugee camp in Kenya on July 25. Abdikadir is 21 and has spent his life in a refugee camp, after the collapse of Somalia. His mom Abshira is 54, and has been in a refugee camp for over 30 years.
Abshira and Abdikadir are relatives of the Hussein and Adan family, who were also sponsored by the church. The pair has been busy since their arrival. The Committee secured an apartment for Abshira and Abdikadir, which they moved into at the start of September. Abdikadir has been taking computer classes at ISANS and is hoping to take English classes soon. He is also looking for work.
With the arrival of Abshira and Abdikadir, the Committee appreciates the assistance of the church and looks forward to the congregation welcoming the pair to Halifax. Our sponsorship commitment continues for a full year, so you will be hearing from us again early in the new year. All assistance that can be provided to support Abshira and Abdikadir is greatly appreciated. This ministry continues to be a collaborative effort and the congregation continues to play a pivotal role in supporting refugees in our community.
