Can you tell me more about Joan’s Table and the new dishwasher?
In partnership with Shelter Nova Scotia, Joan’s Table is a volunteer-based initiative that provides regular, healthy meals to the 12 residents at Herring Cove Apartments and the 19 residents at The Rebuilding Apartment in downtown Halifax. The FBCH Community Outreach Committee has contributed meals from time to time to the Herring Cove Apartments. It is a rewarding experience to prepare a simple home cooked meal and deliver it to the Apartment building where 24-hr staff receive it with open arms. The tenants who enjoy these meals have experienced homelessness and alcohol dependency; they receive onsite staff guidance in identifying goals and building social relationships. A home cooked meal is sincerely appreciated by these men who have faced challenges and are working to improve their lives. To find out more about Joan’s Table, please visit the website www.joanstable.com for easy sign-up to provide a meal.

The Community Outreach donation to Joan’s Table will be made in honor of one of our former members, Marsha Hurshman. Marsha passed away in February of 2024. She had been an active member of the Community Outreach Committee and a great supporter of the Auxiliary for many years. She would be very pleased to see this support for Joan’s Table.

We are so fortunate to have our New Kitchen and Community Room. After many months of concentrated work, the kitchen was operational in November 2025. We are excited by the endless possibilities for use—youth group gatherings, Scouts preparing casseroles for St. Andrew’s Sunday Suppers, lunches with our University Students, Cookie Boxes assemblies, hosting more regular ‘afternoons of cards,’ and preparing congregational lunches. While we were able to move all our appliances to this new space, our faithful dishwasher is showing its age. With over 30 years of service, it is in need of a rest. Some parts are no longer available, so
short term fixes and a few prayers are all that are holding things together.

What if I want to donate directly to Joan’s Table or to the New Dishwasher?
We will have a signup sheet available during the event to capture pertinent details. While any amount will be welcome, if your donation is equal to or greater than $20, an income tax receipt can be issued.

Can you tell me more about the Gardening Gift Basket?
As we prepare for our Annual Plant Sale, May 23rd, this gift basket can’t help but get us thinking of summer and what is possible. You will find seed packets, pots, gardening tools, a gardening magazine or two; items for your après gardening experience, such as fine tea, chocolate, nuts, a special soap or two; and with a look to the end of season, a special vase and a few jams and preserves for a job well done. If not a gardener, don’t worry, many items would make welcome hostess gifts. Tickets will be $5 for 1, or $10 for 3 and will be available upon entry to the Parlour.

Where can I park on May 2nd?
There is some parking in the parking lot directly to the left of the church (1300 Oxford Street). As it is a Saturday and classes will have ended at Dalhousie, there should be parking on the street in front of the church. We suggest you may want to carpool or get dropped off.

There is an elevator available to you as you enter off the parking lot. This will take you to the 3rd floor. Just follow the noise to the gathering in the Parlour.

Is there anything else I need to know?
Don’t forget to bring your own cards, tallies/score cards and table cover, if needed
