Carl Bruce Mathis, of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2026, at The Mount Continuing Care Community. Carl was born on January 4, 1939, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, the son of Clyde and Esther Mathis. He was known for his humour, curiosity, kindness, and devotion to family. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Charles (Heather), Chris (Nancy) and Eric (Andrea). He will be dearly missed by grandkids Andrew (Anna), Rachel (Rob), Adelaide, and Eliza and great-grandkids Gibson, Juniper, and Ben. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 58 years, Rosemary. Carl earned degrees from Kansas State College of Pittsburg and from Wittenberg University.

Carl’s life was shaped by music, teaching, faith, and service. A respected choral conductor, he was recognized across Prince Edward Island as the leader of numerous choirs, notably Coro Dolce. At the University of Prince Edward Island, Carl was an admired teacher and colleague, generously sharing exceptional musicianship and warm encouragement to generations of students who carry on his legacy. Carl’s service to St. Peter’s Cathedral was central to his vocation, contributing to the music ministry as cantor and composer. Over the course of more than five decades, Carl’s infectious passion inspired and nurtured the choral community as a vibrant part of PEI’s cultural life.

The family extends sincere thanks to the care team at The Mount, especially Brenda and Jane, for their professional and loving care.

A service of celebration and thanksgiving for Carl’s life will be held at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Charlottetown, on August 29, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with a choral prelude. Condolences or memories of Carl may be shared at Hennessey Cutcliffe Charlottetown Funeral Home.
