Like you, my heart is heavy today. I watched in horror last night as the Russian invasion of Ukraine escalated and war broke out on a sovereign nation. Like you, I worry and wonder what will happen in the hours, days, and weeks ahead and my prayers rise up for the people of Ukraine who will suffer greatly.
Last night, just before Russia began its assault, many of us gathered on Zoom for Compline. As a news headline about Ukraine flashed across my computer screen, we were praying a paraphrase of the Lord’s Prayer from the New Zealand Prayer Book. The prayer gave words for prayers deep within me that I had no words of my own to surround. Today, I share this with you, hoping that it might be a source of prayer for all of us in the hours and days ahead.
Eternal Spirit,
Earth-maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver, Source of all that is and that shall be, Father and Mother of us all,
Loving God, in whom is heaven:
The hallowing of your name echo through the universe!
The way of your justice be followed by the peoplesof the world!
Your heavenly will be done by all created beings!
Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth.
With the bread we need for today, feed us.
In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us.
In times of temptation and test, strengthen us.
From trials too great to endure, spare us.
From the grip of all that is evil, free us.
For you reign in the glory of the power that is love,
now and for ever. Amen.
