The Revelation of the Magi is an ancient text from the late 2nd century to early 3rd century that tells the story of the Magi from their own perspective. While the text was well known throughout the early centuries of the church, it largely disappeared from the memory of the Church. In 2010, Brent Landau, then a Th.D. student at Harvard, discovered the only remaining copy of the text, an 8th century text in the Syriac language that was held in the Vatican archives. In 2010 he translated into English for the first time.

Rusty learned about the text last summer and read it as part of his preparations for the upcoming Advent-Christmas season. He found the Revelation of the Magi inspiring and now invites others at FBCH to discover this ancient text. It’s an easy read, much like reading a short book of scripture. He believes our reading together will enrich our experience of the Advent-Christmas season.

To make this even more interesting, Brent Landau, the translator of Revelation of the Magi, will join us for two Zoom sessions. The first session will help us better understand the type of ancient Christian literature we’ll be reading. This session will better prepare us to read the text (it is recommended that you do not begin reading until after this session). Three weeks later we will gather again with Brent to share our insights and ask questions.

The Revelation of the Magi is readily available as a digital book. It is out of print, so physical copies can only be purchased used (if you want a physical copy you should order it ASAP).
