David Lee Mensink
October 15, 1948 - February 28, 2025

David Lee Mensink, 76, of Victoria, BC, passed away February 28, 2025, at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC. Born in Grand Rapids,Michigan, he was the son of Deanetta Mensink (van de Riet) and Lawrence John Mensink. He was named after King David in the bible and Lee Street Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. David was dedicated to helping others. Whether through his profession, his church, or his family, he always found his own way to be of service. He was a charitable man, donating his time and money throughout his life to various organizations, including former universities, his churches, and most recently the Victoria Hospitals Foundation. He grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and his early years were normal and happy other than contending with a visual disability. After High school he went to Calvin College in Michigan, and then went on to receive two master’s degrees in Chicago and Edmonton. He completed his PhD and postdoctoral thesis at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, AB. He spent the rest of his career doing counselling psychology, first at Dalhousie University for over 30 years where he mentored many students in his role, and then at a private practice in Victoria, BC prior to his retirement. He attended and completed various courses to support his work up until the month before he passed away with multiple myeloma. He served as president of three prominent organizations: Association of Psychologists of Nova Scotia, the Dalhousie Faculty Association, and the BC Psychological Association, where he received a Lifetime Achievement Award to recognize his exemplary contributions to the practice of psychology. He is survived by his three daughters: Krista Seaboyer (Mensink), Lesley Crystal (Mensink), and Joy Sherlock (Mensink); three brothers: Bryce Mensink, Ron Mensink, and Jeff Mensink; sister Carol Simle (Mensink); four grandchildren: Kaspar Seaboyer, Juniper Crystal, Penelope Crystal, and Audrey Sherlock; and seven nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by both of his parents, Lawrence and Deanetta. He was highly regarded by his students and colleagues and well loved by his family and friends. The memorial service will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, 930 Burdett Avenue, Victoria, BC, on March 15, 2025, at 11:00 am. Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, Halifax, Christ Church Cathedral, Victoria, or the Victoria Hospitals Foundation. “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:21
